Werk slimmer, niet harder!
Being busy is a feeling, some people can work 40 hours and not feel busy, others can work 20 hours and feel busy. You can work harder to achieve less and smarter to achieve more. You need a healthy mind and body to achieve whatever you are working on/for. For the sake of your health, be smart in achieving your daily task at work, go for lunch when you have to, close when you have to, take a vacation when you have to and stop selling your free hours. It’s not for nothing that your company gives you paid holidays in a year. They understand you need a break to be refreshed, so they can benefit from a fresh minded and energetic employee 🤗. Don’t forget, if you break down and fall sick as a result of working too hard without a break, your company will not close down and wait for you to recover; It will continue to operate. This shows you are replaceable, everyone is.
You can work smarter by having a good daily plan and prioritizing your task by order of importance. A good work plan yields good outcomes, accomplishing a lot in a day at an efficient and effective manner. With this, you don’t find yourself being busy and being all over the place without knowing what to do; as popularly termed as “Busybody” in my country 😂. Give some flexibility in your planning, so you can have room for urgent matters. Personally, planning my daily activities has helped me a lot at work. I am able to achieve a lot in a day at a relaxed manner, without getting bored or feeling busy. Below is my daily plan as a carrier account manager, it may not be suitable for you in your role, but this is what works for me in my current role:
08:00-09:00 Replying emails and tracking previous delivery.
09:00-11:00 Calling to sell same day freight.
11:00-12:00 Sending emails to sell future freight.
13:00-14:00 Calling to follow up on emails.
14:00- 15:30 Building relationship with existing and new carriers.
By 15:30 I am exhausted; my mind is tired so from 15:30-16:00, I go online to read eg.(I visit company site to read newsletters) to get refreshed.
16:00-16:45 Research on new carriers.
16:45 to 17:00 Organize my notes during the day and prioritize what to do next morning.
You may be wondering if I don’t pee or drink coffee in-between 😂. I do, but it doesn’t take me more than 3 minutes to pee or grab a coffee. My plan is not rigid and I like to be flexible in what I do, therefore, I start differently at times and not following the same order every day.
Working smarter by having a good plan has affected my work positively. I close each day knowing that I accomplished most of my daily tasks in an efficient and smart manner 😉.
